I’ll admit it, I’ve been there. It is the worst feeling in the world, and the collection agencies make it feel even worse. It wasn’t long after I moved to California, that the creditors started calling, and I began to wonder if I would be able to keep my house. To keep my house seemed like the most important thing in the world to me, and I was ready to do anything to make that happen.
A Short personal background
It was 2009. My aunt and uncle were feeling the pain of the economic crisis in 2006, and I decided to come to the rescue. I knew that there would be no money for salary or pay, but I believed it was my duty to get involved.
So, I quit my job in New Jersey, and I moved to Bakersfield. I was able to make my mortgage payments for a few months on my home in Jersey, but without any income, it was hard to keep up the payments. I thought that I would be able to get a job at nights and on weekends to pay the mortgage and keep the house while being there for my family, but I was wrong.
I tried to explain my situation to the people on the phone. They called every hour, it seemed. I explained that I was a good person. I explained that this is a temporary situation, and I said, that I would pay everything that they were owed including the penalties, but they seemed not to care. They treated me like I was a criminal. They treated me like I was the lowest life-form they had ever talked to. I never want to feel that way again, and I I wanted was to be a good person, to help my family and keep my house.
how I recovered
I did lose my house. I lost my retirement. I lost many things, but I found a new purpose. I realized that there are people out there just like me who need short-term help. Sometimes they just need someone who will listen, and sometimes they need someone like me that has been there before.
